Janis Valencia

Bio.jpg

Born and raised in San Jose, Janis has been dancing seriously since the age of 17. Thanks to Mona Schlieper and Kellye Dodd, she was reintroduced to dance at Independence High School through extracurricular programs. Her participation in competitive Winter Guard allowed her to travel regionally and gain experience on a precision based and performance driven team. Early company involvements include the high school group, IndepenDance Company, where she was introduced to modern dance and Limon technique. Janis continued to progress her dance training at numerous summer intensives and through Ohlone College, San Francisco State University, and currently at San Jose State University, where she anticipates her BFA in Dance in May 2019.

Janis' company involvements include University Dance Theater under the direction of Cathleen McCarthy and Ray Tadio, as well as Heather Cooper and Raphael Boumaila. She has also danced soloist and ensemble parts with Bliss Dance Company under the mentorship of Cassie Begley as well as ResplenDANCE Company under the direction of Felicity Muñoz. Currently, Janis teaches regular dance classes and always feels grateful for her students. Inspired by her dance composition professor, Fred Mathews, Janis hopes to become a professional choreographer with interest in modern dance and performance art.
